I've just started using the 10 Books Bible Reading List that Mrs. Beaver recommended in their family blog.
Yesterday, one verse from Proverbs 8 in HCSB version made me wonder:
Verse 5: Learn to be shrewd, you who are inexperienced; develop common sense, you who are foolish.
How in the world does one develop common sense? My first thought was to hang out with people with common sense. Then it's just a matter of recognizing who has and has it not. I wouldn't say that's the easiest thing if one doesn't have much common sense oneself.
My Asis recommended reading the Bible... if so, then why didn't Solomon just tell us to read the Scriptures?
NASB isn't much easier:
Proverbs 8:5 O naive ones, understand prudence; and O fools, understand wisdom.
Understand wisdom?! I thought we were supposed to gain both understanding and wisdom! It sounds intimidating to need one in order to gain the other (might have just had bad logic in that sentence).
Frankly, I don't like not knowing how to live this verse out, especially when it seems like it should be so straightforward!
Confuzzled,
CJ
